The Civil Rights Workgroup works to defend people who live in San Francisco's parks and streets from the various branches of the criminal justice system that are used by opportunistic politicians and classist interest to oppress poor people. We do this work through community organizing to change laws and policies, monitoring and documentation of police abuse of power, and a ground-breaking citation defense program that has become a model for work in other cities.
Right now, the main focus of our work is the prevention of a new anti-homeless law—a "sit/lie" law that would make it illegal to sit or lie down on sidewalks within commercial corridors in San Francisco. Learn more about the sit/lie law, and get flyers you can use to oppose the law here.
Our Civil Rights Organizer is Bob Offer-Westort. Bob can be reached at 415.346.3740 x312, or civilrights@cohsf.org.
Meetings are every Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at our office at 468 Turk Street, between Hyde and Larkin.
